Each state has their own board of cosmetology and barbery. This board has the responsibility to protect and educate consumers who look to perform barbering, manicures, electrology and other cosmetology services. They also are in charge of regulating individuals who provide services and the salons in which the services are performed.

Part of their duties is to ensure that applicants for licensure have completed the necessary training needed for the licensing categories available in their state and make sure the applicants pass a written and practical examination. If a consumer has a complaint against a person or place of business like a salon, they would submit their complaint to the state board of cosmetology, and they will review and decide what actions they will take against the accused.

Salon Consumer Tip

When you arrive at a salon, take the opportunity to observe the person performing the service you plan to receive and the overall activities in the salon. Are employees washing their hands? Are they washing clients feet when performing a pedicure? Are areas where services are provided clean and organized? Multi-use tools that are metal and plastic must be cleaned and disinfected with each new client. If there is an appearance of lotion, skin, hair or anything that shows the tool hasn't been cleaned or disinfected, it shouldn't be used. Ask the cosmetologist or nail technician to clean and disinfect the item before it is used on you.
