Iowa Cosmetology License Requirements
Must have a high school diploma or GED and must show proof of graduation from cosmetology school.
Iowa Beauty School Hours
Cosmetologist License: 2100 Hours

Esthetician License: 600 Hours
Nail Technician License: 325 Hours
Electrologist License: 400 Hours
Cosmetology Instructor License: Cosmetology License + 1000 Hours Instructor Training Or 2 Years Work Experience In Last 6 Years
Massage Therapist License: 500 Hours
Iowa Cosmetology License Renewal
Iowa cosmetology licenses expire every two years and needs to be renewed by December 31 of even numbered years. The fee to renew your license is $60. Iowa requires 8 hours of cosmetology continuing education each period to renew.
Iowa Cosmetology License Reciprocity (Change or Transfer)
You may be able to gain licensure through endorsement, Iowa does not have reciprocity arrangements with other states. Each application for transfer is reviewed by the Iowa board of cosmetology on a case by case basis. Your home state must have similar or equivalent licensing requirements to Iowa. Depending on the length of your licensure and the exam you took in your home state you may be required to take the Iowa exam or get additional training hours.
